Hey I'm making a little present package for some friends, and I thought about making them a disc with a bunch of games on it, but then it occured to me "how cool would it be to just tell them to put this in your pc, and BANG! .. gaems tiem?"

I know there's a few linux distros built around Mame, and Quake, and Emulators, but what else is out there? Am I missing any super-good sleeper hits?

What is it exactly you want on the disc?

I'm thinking like, la mulana, or cavestory or something fun like that

Of course, that's from '07 so you might want to put something newer as well, for example Iji.

Are you going to put in a collection, or just one or two? 'Cause it changes things, I suppose. That is a mighty fine list there, but there would be stuff missed.

hrm, how many of these games have linux support though? if its going to be a LiveCD it would have to be based off linux wouldnt it?

Also, it'd be nice to give them a variety.

It might be possible to install all the things you want into a Puppy Linux distro, and then remaster it into a liveCD. However, it might take a bit of work to get the sound and headphones to work, and it does not use the same package system as anything else so, I suppose you possibly make a liveCD of, say, DSL or some such distribution if you plan to use debian packages.

Game-wise, smokin guns has a linux version, nexuis is rather popular, Cave Story has a linux port floating around (only in package format) which works rather well. All of kenta cho's games are in linux now. Battle for Wesnoth is an amazing strategy game. And, of course, you may be able to include windows programs if you can get them working in Wine.

What about saves? Most games simply put saves in the game folder and that'll be kinda difficult with a CD.

I had this same idea, but there was one big difference, which made saves a possiblity:

put it on a USB memory stick.

nihilocrat idea is better than mine, he also smells better, and Ive been told he's got a big...fire place.
