maybe, but it's going to be free so I don't imagine that being a problem.

Seems weird for Valve to publish a game that steals their intellectual property.

Well it's a mod built off Half-Life 2, not a standalone game. Also if Valve really had an issue they would've done something about it by now, seeing as the mod had been in development for quite a few years.

Nobody's going to go out of their way to buy half life 1 any time soon.
By letting black mesa source port the game over the the source engine, everyone gets to re-experience half life 1 which will no doubt spur additional sales of people who are curious how half life 1 really was.

Possible, yeah, but I think most people who will download the mod are people who already played Half-Life 1 and just want to see how these people redid it with more modern technology.

Black Mesa devs have reported this won't be a 1:1 conversion, rather, it will do its own approach to things. Probably because it gave them a few artistic liberties and probably less risk of having it be sued by valve.
Back on topic, getting all those urls is taking longer than intended. Damn.

It's effectively standalone according to the greenlight page, in that one doesn't need to buy hl2 to play. ("Requires only a FREE installation of the 2007 Source SDK!")

Yeah, source SDK is free these days (since... Alien Swarm, I believe), so as long as it doesn't actually use any assets from any of the source games it can be completely free.

It's important to note that valve are no strangers to black mesa, they know all about it.
It's an interesting position for the black mesa team though as that product does break a bunch of rules and are using an IP they do not own, but I don't think valve will take that down as it serves to give valve an idea of how many wants to see black mesa as a free downloadable title for steam.

Yeah, still not not weird. And it doesn't piss me off any less. Fangames are the lowest form of game in my opinion. Make your own fucking game, don't just piggyback on the nostalgia for someone else's game.
Edited for grammar.

votes are hidden; you can't see them except indirectly through the "%" progress of a game

I think Steam uses a mix of votes, faves and in how many (and which) collections the games do appear. I assume the collection thing is a key factor... There is an unoffical tool that shows some stats of the Greenlight games. Moreover here is what they say on the Greenlight FAQ:"...the specific number of votes doesn’t matter as much as relative interest in a game compared with other games in Steam Greenlight."
