now that we have precise mesurment instruments, we don't need a system based on, "the width of a mans thumb", " the length of a man's foot" and "the distance between a mans nose and his outstreatched thumb" or " the length of a man's stride".

Meters are simple. People should stop using crazy ways to measure things that don't make sense.

Yeah, but then we'd have to find some other excuse for crashing expensive robots into Mars.

You Scandinavians need to find me a job and a place to live over there.
I'm tired of this North Carolina weather... 72 degrees in December for a week, then it's suddenly near-freezing. This happens only after a 6-month summer (May-September) that is so hot and humid you never want to go outside.
It snowed in November already, they were just flurries. The last "real" snow was in 2003 or 2005 I think. I've always had fond memories of snow because everything shuts down (meaning, school) when we get more than maybe two or three inches.
*ahem* well, I guess to fit in, I have to say something ridiculous involving measurements. One time, the snow got as high as two cubits! It was an El Nino year.

We finally, finally got snow here. I was almost late for my exam this morning because I had to dig my car out.
It's only about half a foot to a foot of snow, but this city is completely unprepared, so pretty much everything was shut down yesterday. Also I have no snow-appropriate clothes.

PORTLAND FINALLY GOT SNOW!
YUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
the funny thing about portland is that it's usually a rainy city, cold and wet but not quite cold enough for snow. so we get an inch or two of snow and everyone in the city, including the newscasters, goes:
it's a blizzard, folks. you're going to need to stock up on food and lock yourself in your house for weeks on end. don't go outside, because the second you step across the threshold of your house, you'll be killed by snow. don't drive. your car will flip over 7 times because of the snow, and then it'll crash into a mother with her baby and you'll all die.
anyway though i was fucking thrilled to see snow

Its -42C with windchill in . Not saying it isn't colder elsewhere, just saying I don't like the cold in general. Although I would find some excuse to never leave the house in Winnipeg weather.

We got some snow this morning in Seattle. It's quite a bit for this area. I was out for a walk and not two blocks from my place were a couple stranded buses and a three car pile-up. As I walked back, a jeep slid down a nearby hill backwards. Chaos, it was.

I made the mistake of going for an hour and a half hike in Edmonton today; I got back to my car with legs that were probably getting close to frostbite (my coat/gloves/scarf kept the rest of me pretty warm though). I think it was probably worth it though, as it was a pretty nice hike.
