At the beginning of 2017 I announced that I would make one game per month in 2017.
Now, after 6 months, it is time for me to reflect and to learn, to make my next 6 months more productive and enjoyable.
This write-up consists of 6 short sections, each talking about aspect of making games that I need to pay more attention to.
I am writing this as a letter to my future self, for me to read whenever i am stuck and feel like i do not amount to anything (which I do not think I do, but sometimes it is hard to see ^^)
Feedbackis important. Ask for it and then actually listen to it. You may see the big flaws in your project, but the small flaws are also important and need to be adressed. Sometimes they hold the solutions to the big flaws.
Do not ask for feedback all the time, it will slow progress down immensly. You do not have to please your testers, you have to respect them.
Perfectionismis your perfect enemy. Do not listen to the voices that say that your game should be perfect. You do not need to make something revolutionary, you need to learn while doing something ok. Your awesome Ideas will never directly translate into a great game. Accept that and try to make something great anyways.
Failureis something that happens. The two broken games you had to publish so far do not need a third sibling. Take a short break, try to find the reasons for your failure and then get back into it.
Failiure sucks. Not tyring because you are afraid of failing sucks even more.
Disciplinewould be cool to have. Do not hate yourself for not working enough, but try to work as much as you can. If you stop working for a few days, do not be afraid to pick a project up again. It is easiey to torture yourself for not working, it is even easier to get back into devlopement.
Crunchworks very well for very small games. But the small games you make on a weekend do not have the depth you want them to have. You can not make something as deep and emotional as you want to make in a few days. There are enough arcade games, stop making them just because it comes easy to you.
Storiesare lacking in your games. The world does not need more roguelikes. Videogames can be more than a highscore. Videogames do not have to try to be movies or books. Try to tell stories that only videogames can tell.
Now on to 6 more months of making games!
I will be exhibiting my games at the reversed Festival in Vienna, come say hi!
