That reminds me...
~Deep down in the flippin' 80s~ Someone-San: "Kojima-San, you have the worst ideas I ever heard! An action game in which you don't have to shoot lots of people but try to avoid battle? This is ridiculous!" Kojima-San: "Hai, Hai. I'm deeply sorry for saying such crazy things. This concept will never work or even be succesful."

I guess I could contribute as well, though my idea isn't quite as elite as the ones already said.
Ant RL (if not already in existence).
Lead an ant colony. I imagine it would share many of the gameplay elements of Dwarf Fortress, but with less ale and diorite, and more antennae and carrying things 100 times your weight. And rain-flooding and gum.
You forgot with having to deal with sugar deposits causing addiction in your ants, and those pesks little boys with magnifying lens.

Yes, Firefox Roguelike is indeed as good an idea as Metal Gear Solid :D
You have a very modest opinion of yourself :D

I don't know how far your ability to interpret analogies but what I actually wanted to say: Ideas that are non-standart do not deserve to be called "bad". In fact, "standart" (non-surprising) ideas never really produced something brilliant. But I don't think you did mean that serious anyway, just as much as I meant Firefox ASCII serious. :D Come on, buddy. It's HaowanHug-time.

)Oh, and:
Why didn't anyone think of that: (or did anyone?)
SciFi Planet Exploration Roguelike: + You have a Spaceship + You can fly to all different kinds of planets (proc-gen?) + (o.k., that kinda exceeds "roguelike" but (I totally agree with haowan here) discussing that is bullshit anyway) Dialogue, a Story (inspired by Mass Effect? :D, Trading with NPCs
The great thing about that would be that the creation of numerous planets shouldn't serve too much of a problem since it's much more time consuming to actually create "real" graphics for each planet. Using ASCII you just need ~imagination~ to see things. (well, we know how great ASCII works for displaying landscapes -> Dwarf Fortress!)

I was actually considering making a rougelike called "HelpIOpenedA.JPEGinNotepadAndiDontKnowWhatToDo.txt"
but figured that it would never live up to the name.

Managable RL: -Doesn't have two functions for every single letter on the keyboard(!)
Takes place in a fantasy realm where devolopers realize that maybe making such an obtuse system that you have to refer to the manual constantly to make sure you're pressing the right key is a bad idea.

There are some kinda like that, and I'm planning on making one in that vein. One that comes to mind is DoomRL, which while simpler than 99% of other roguelikes, is also more fun than 80% and hella addictive. Are you man enough to kill the Cyberdemon? Derek's a big fan of it.

Powder has a nice menu-driven interface, which I thought was pretty staggering... and a tutorial too. Madness.
IVAN is /relatively/ simple IIRC, and has lots of eye-candy so feels a bit more immediate that most. (Sorry I didn't give a link earlier!)
I gotta play that DoomRL. Wasn't Derek making a tileset for it?

Yeah, the tileset is like 80% done. I'm waiting for Kornel to add graphics support and then I's going nuts on it. DoomRL is definitely awesome, though! And I'm gonna add some RL's to the database now.

A ghostbusters RL where you go to procedurally generated houses and mansions to exterminate ghosts and get cash to get better gear. The houses all have procedurally generated family histories that effect what types of ghosts haunt the house.

this is (slightly) offtopic, but i've been working on a little prototype for an idea I had. It's called RLML (Roguelike Markup Language). Basically an XML based roguelike template thingie. If anyone is interested in contributing, PM me.

... I'd certainly be interested, but there's probably nothing I could do for it On another note: Any good roguelikes that work in Ubuntu?
