Let's make this into a metaphor - would you like to go back to mid-school, with the assignment of making a Papier-mâché horsie and after finishing it, have one girl hug it and 20 boys pee on it and the girl after 10 cans of coke each?

I don't know your fetish man, but i certainly don't like urine on my horsies.

Your metaphor is invalid because you are not being forced to participate in this competition. You are supposed to submit things you create specifically for this compo, so the real metaphor is that you decide to enter a school play and you are tasked with making a papier mache horse and are explicitly told that a girl will hug it and 20 boys will pee on it.

But I have to agree I prefer urine-less horses myself.

I'd like to see more enemy and boss sprites. There aren't too many of those, yet.

Quick question, and I realise it's probably already been answered, but I can't find it.
I realise that we can't edit assets, but can we move sprites within sprite sheets/change background color/split animated gifs into sprite sheets for ease of use in games? For example of someone provides an asset with *say* a pink background, but you only have code which will load assets with transparent backgrounds can you erase the background/make it transparent? Or if you have all of the sprites on one sheet but need the player on one sheet and the enemys on another, can you split them up?
I don't want to hear the reply "that's the artists responsibility" as every artist is different and some simply won't.

Thanks in advance.

I believe Derek said that assets can be changed in run-time (blending, stretching, rotating, filtering-the-shit-out-of, etc). I imagine converting files and setting up spritesheets/strips is also good since in the end it has no perceived effect.

Great, thanks for the clarifications. I was really thinking about pre-processing the assets so they cam be used more eaisily.

I'm thinking of recording a bunch of random questions, answers, and in-game taunts in various voices that can be recombined in humorous ways.

OH YES! <3

Do we maybe want to start compiling a list of tools? Focusing on free or cheap. Art and music stuff for this month, and maybe come up with a list of game engines and coding tutorials for next month.

OSX art:

artrage: demo lets you save, has 8 tools, but no layers. full version is $25.

paintbrush: mspaint for OSX. free!

Someone will suggest pixen but it does nothing but crash for me in 10.5.6 and 10.6, so I'd avoid it.

Nunix, I think compiling a list of tools is a very good idea.
I know it has been done before. So I searched around the forum a bit and found a thread devoted to free development tools.

So if I want to make music and art both, do I start two threads?  Noir

everyone else that is doing multiple types of assets has been making 1 thread for them all. Also "teams" seem to be making 1 topic for their team, as well.

Every contributor, be they a single person or team, must make only one thread. If you'll make both sound and art, you can use the Assemblee generic icon beside your thread.

I was wondering if we are allowed to modify assets?

At first I had it in mind because I needed something analogous to format conversion (color key -> alpha). But just to be clear on the rules, is modification allowed, and if so, how?

(Of course, the original author is being asked first and credited and and--)
