Don't take this the wrong way, but I was really trying to come up with an idea exactly like this, and I even made some prototypes, but I wasn't insightful or talented enough to get the concept working. It's awesome when you really want to play a particular kind of game, and then someone obligingly goes ahead and makes it for you!
I made a very basic prototype for an 'escape' game where you had to pilot a ship, using 'asteroids-style' controls, through a maze before you hit the bottom of the screen. The idea was that there was an explosion at the bottom of the screen you were escaping, I just think it's so funny that we see films like Return of the Jedi where spaceships can out-run an explosion so I figure I should make a game about it. The screen would slowly scroll at a constant rate (like a SHMUP) and hitting obstacles just made you bounce off of them, so you could only really lose if you weren't careful enough and didn't make your way past. I lost interest somewhere in between getting annoyed at the game being so 'bouncy' and trying to rewrite the tile collision code to handle non-square-shaped things.

Awesome! So much atmosphere in so little. Love the music. Curse those windows. I could go on forever if it weren't for them.

I disagree with Guert that there are no choices. You are constantly trying to decide if you are going too fast, and whether you need to hit an obstacle or two.
I would like to note that I was talking about a lack of choices. Not there aren't any.

This is great, I love this version. I couldn't play for very long, but I like watching videos, so I can appreciate all the action going on in the background and listen to the nice music. The gameplay didn't feel very experimental at all, though -- but the presentation sure was nice!

I found the game via EGP and thought it was brilliant. Very addictive, and a rich, thick atmosphere for such a simple game. I love the big robots blasting stuff in the background. I love the birds and shattering glass. The music by Danny B is fantastic. Did he do the sound effects, too? That doppler sound when that thing drops from the sky and smashes into the top of buildings is wicked.

as I said on twitter (but since you're not following me) you should incorporate these features into flixel. I bet it would drive a lot of people to adopt the API as a means of escaping the flash portal hegemony and running their own sites.

They're already in I just won't have a chance to really bug check it and clean up the API for a few weeks, so it should go out in the October public!
