also in the 90s it was super rare for series to be as big as megaman. at the time, final fantasy and MM were pretty much the only series i knew with more than 3 entries (and i didn't even know a lot with more than 2). it' wasn't like today where AAA publishers try to annualize everything.
anyway the problem today is: everyone loves to whine about endless sequels but they don't actually buys new games.

I totally and fully agree
It's almost impossible to sell a new ip , or it's very hard
That's why people make follow up to their big name
For example Would be great to see nintendo to make a 2d mario platformer but not with mario , a total new universe with new mecanics etc but not sure will happen since people will not buy it but they'll said too much marios etc.

It's best for them to make a cheap console with no support, cheap enough that it's worth their game aside bigger console as companion, they also are very fine with current visual target
