Looks neat, but whenever I see something game-oriented in HTML5 I wonder how it's ever going to catch on if the gigantic performance hit versus Flash / plugins isn't fixed.

I like that this runs on iPhone. Admittedly, not astoundingly well, but yeah. Good stuff.

I was thinking about this today, actually. I do think this will eventually take off; it would be cool to write games with a javascript-based game engine something like flashpunk, but for HTML5. Maybe flashpunk for HTML5?

EDIT: Just played the games here, this is really cool! It runs nice and smooth in Chrome...

Someone just linked me this and so far I'm impressed.  HTML 5 Javascript has a lot of potential.

Also it works on iPhones and Android phones.  Neato.

I just tried these games on my iPhone and Chrome brower.
They ran slower and clunkier on my iPhone(for obvious reasons), but hey, they work!

Top stuff  Hand Thumbs Up Left
I'm definitely going to start following HTML5 gaming more now.

Surely the web's just a platform for providing content - the type of content shouldn't be dictated by standards drawn up like 13 years ago?

HTML5 can't seriously be used for games cause of a thing called "view -> show page source" or equivalent

I don't see why it couldn't or shouldn't be. By the way, have you heard of a thing called Newgrounds, or Kongregate?

HTML5 can't seriously be used for games cause of a thing called "view -> show page source" or equivalent
What's the problem with that?

As for the thing at hand, am I the only one who has auto-find on type enabled in Firefox, which messes this up royally?

AFAIK HTML5 has realtime audio capabilities. Again I'm not sure this is going to impress anybody at first but I am interested because a) javascript is pretty powerful esp. with engines like Google's V8 b) seems long term like it could be a more compatable, smoother experience than flash.

At any rate I'm going to keep making games in flashpunk for now, but I really do think that one day (10 years from now?) this is going to be the way to get it done.

Yeah, <audio> tag, but I guess it still relies on the implementation to support whatever format you put the audio in.

Really cool concept, but damn, the demo games sucked! Good technology, terrible execution.

Yeah, HTML5 is pretty damn cool.  As for it not being a gaming platform...

Well, tell that to my Sharp calculator whenever I got bored in Math class.

Does that really count, though? Is WebGL any part of HTML5?

From wikipedia:

Technically it is a binding for JavaScript  to native OpenGL ES 2.0 implementations, to be built in to browsers. The WebGL specification itself is designed to mirror that of OpenGL ES 2.0. It is an extension of the canvas HTML5 element.

So, yes it is.

It's kind of like JOGL for Java. Which allows you to leverage OpenGL, and thus dump all your rendering requirements on to the graphics card.

It doesn't make your code any faster - any computation you do in code is still going to be slow, but anything you offload onto OpenGL is going to run lightning fast. It's the one thing Flash is missing and should really catch up with.

To get an idea of what would be possible, let me point out that the video below was made with Java.

So with javascript and WebGL on a decent browser...
