The reason is that loud music sounds better, or at least more impressive, to most people.

dum the old banjo games would use a small ensemble if they used live instruments instead of midi

They should add a stretchgoal in which they insert Grant Kirknope swearings into soundtrack.

Animations are kind of not that good, but the plot seems nice enough.
Yes I speak french so I understood.

I guess it finally happened; cartoon shaded 3D doesn't have to look like shit. It kind of does here but I can imagine it doesn't take a much higher budget to make it look ok.

At least it's not detuned like some of those soundfont videos on youtube but he got the envelopes all wrong. I really dislike these videos claiming they're capturing the sound of some old console while they're using modern digital audio worstations with modern reverb and modern equalizing. They barely even get the essence of those original sound chips. Even worse are those "HD" retro soundtracks which are just audio tracks with slight panning and reverb added. Like, you're not even trying at that point. Also yeah that animation thing is pretty impressive for a single guy. I hope the writing makes up for the voice acting though.

Come on, they obviously got the essence as a lot of people can't tell. You're just too knowledgeable yourself. I don't think most non-audiophiles/non-musicians will notice any real difference.

why would you want to get the "essence" of the n64 "sound chip" in the 1st place? the n64/ps1 era is one of the worst sounding of them all. all of the good soundtracks were good despite the cheesy low quality samples, not because. >:(

I can't tell that either. :p Original OSTs for games like MM, OoT and SM64 sound great to me. I wouldn't have known they were MIDI had I not been told. A little bit more obvious in BK, but still nice IMO.

That's what they said about chiptune music I heard (and snes music) Also technically midi is equivalent to "soundfont" music like on snes, except with standardized sound sample more of the time, N64 use custom sample, Midi got a bad rep because of the standard samples in bad sound card, can sound fantastic with good one (but generally don't because it is compose with them in mind). PSX use cd track or custom 32k encoded wav, saying it's teh worse sounded is saying wav is bad ...

didnt say they dont sound good. but claiming they sound somehow better than either better quality samples & effects and/or live instruments is a bit ehhhhh
honestly the reason orchestral game soundtracks get a bad rep sometimes is because every game composer thinks they have to be john williams as soon as they get to work with an orchestra.

chiptunes have their own sound at least (even if im not personally a big fan of them). the snes sampler also sounds like its own thing even if the megadrive fm synth sounds better to me. the n64 midi is like this transitional period where it sounds like a bad imitation of sth else (imo).
also yes oops i was wrong about the psx. i was thinking of the ff7 soundtrack which is midi and sounds godawful in places (never played much else other than FF on the ps1)
